Le roman le plus connu de lord Dunsany est La Fille du roi des Elfes.
C'est sur l'ordre du roi son père que le prince Alvéric entreprend de traverser la forêt enchantée pour y découvrir et enlever la fille du roi des Elfes. Il la trouve en effet, après avoir combattu les chevaliers qui défendent sa demeure, mais le rapt n'aura pas lieu : en effet, c'est de son plein gré que la princesse Lirazel, conquise, suivra le jeune prince jusqu'au royaume d'Erl, où naîtra Orion, le fruit de leurs amours.
Mais le roi des Elfes, furieux, envoie vers sa fille un troll porteur d'un message magique qui la ramène près de lui. Alvéric, inconsolable, part à sa recherche, mais protégée par la magie de son roi, le domaine des Elfes est devenu introuvable. Tandis qu'Orion, qui grandit en beauté et en sagesse, apprend à connaître la forêt enchantée…
